Let’s explore the Mediterranean region and discover the tastes of Greek cuisine. With a significant influence from Turkish and Italian cuisine, Greek food is a focused around olive oil, vegetables, and herbs specific to the Mediterranean region. I picked the following dishes from the vast list of Greek specialties. You may be familiar with and fond of many of them, but feel free to do some research and find some interesting recipes to prepare and enjoy with the group.
Appetizers
Spanakopita - flaky filo dough triangles filled with a tasty spinach and feta cheese mixture;
Tiropitakia - filo dough triangles filled with cheese
Taramosalata - salty spread made of cured roe of cod or carp, great dip for pita bread
Salads
Greek Summer Salad - salad consisting of tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese and olives
Lima Bean and Beet Salad with Smoked Herring - healthy and tasty salad with a touch of smoked fish
Main course
Lahanodolmathes (Cabbage Rolls) - wilted cabbage leaves stuffed with ground pork and rice
Moussaka - casserole made by layering eggplant with a spiced meat filling then topping it off with a creamy bechamel sauce and baking to golden perfection.
Dessert
Melomakarona (Spice Cookies) - Greek spice cookies that are often soaked in a honey-based syrup. With tastes of cinnamon and cloves, they are delicious at any time of year (also called Phoenikia or Finikia).
Milopita (Apple cake) - A moist and tender apple cake that is the perfect showcase for crisp and delicious apples.
